DR. MICHELOW AND CONTEMPORARY COSMETIC SURGERY IN THE NEWS. FROM THE BEACHWOOD PATCH

BHS Marketing Students Head to International DECA Competition

They will compete against 15,000 in Orlando By Nikki Ferrell | | April 29, 2011 Photo Nikki Ferrell

Five students from the Excel TECC marketing class at Beachwood High School will travel to Orlando Saturday to compete in an international marketing competition.

When they were pitted against 3,000 students at the district competition, 22 out of the 23-student class took trophies home.
However, they say the competition is secondary to the work they do in the class: earning money by actually providing marketing services to real companies.

“Everyone in our class — no one studied, but we blew everyone out of the water just because what we take on the test,” said Kaulan Hooper, a student in the class. “What we do in our role-plays, that’s exactly what we do for actual clients,” he added.
“So we’re not practicing. We’re actually doing, which makes it so much easier to do when you actually go to the competition.”

The class spent one semester doing research for Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery, a local company that asked the class to help them reach the teen market.

Students organized focus groups and conducted their own research about teens’ attitudes about tanning, which they presented to the company.

“The students did a wonderful job,” said Dr. Brian Michelow of Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery in a press release. “We learned that teens are hearing the message about healthy skin but they are not necessarily listening. Mrs. Getz and her class helped us understand the teen thought process when it comes to skincare and what was important to them in product and services."

In fact, the company was so pleased with the students’ work, they paid them double.
The class teaches the students more than just marketing. From how to act and dress around a real business client to the vocabulary the students have to decipher from the college-level textbook the class uses, the students walk out more prepared for the real world, they said.

With the after-school internships they are required to hold during the school year, the independent work outside class with their client and even the fact that they choose their own curriculum for the school year, responsibility plays a huge role for Getz’s class.

The rest of this school year, the class will continue refining their research to send it to a state legislator who has proposed a bill that would more strictly prohibit tanning for minors. They will also continue Chik-Fil-A breakfasts they have sporadically throughout the year, and they are selling T-shirts to raise extra money.
The class is part of Excel TECC, a six-school collaboration that offers college prep, tech prep and other learning opportunities to students. Other classes in Excel TECC include the Culinary Arts class, which runs a cafĂ© in Beachwood High School’s cafeteria; and the Green Dream, which hosts a green business expo annually. Getz’s class is the only one in the state that earns college-level marketing and accounting credits, she said.

Physician Assistant Student Elective in Plastic Surgery

Working with Dr. Michelow during my elective clinical rotation as a Physician Assistant student was truly an honor and a privilege to experience the field of Plastic Surgery.

He is a gifted surgeon and incredible teacher which made my time spent at Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery a rich learning experience. During this clinical rotation, Dr. Michelow was generous in sharing information about clinical techniques, patient interactions, and professional demeanor.

It was beneficial to have to opportunity to first assist during most surgery cases. Having the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Michelow has allowed me to improve my clinical skills such as suturing, various injections, and incision and drainages.

Surgeries ranged from extensive reconstructive and cosmetic cases in the operating room to various in-office procedures. It was interesting to work with a patient population ranging in age from toddlers to the elderly and being involved in surgery cases dealing with every part of the body from head to toe.

Dr. Michelow left me inspired to reach further and do more in my career as a PA. I would highly recommend other PA students interested in furthering their clinical skills to experience an elective rotation working with Dr. Michelow and his extremely helpful and caring office staff at Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery.

Community Support

Collaboration with Beachwood, High School Senior Marketing Class.

Results are in:
When it Comes to Skin Health, Teens Hear but Don’t Listen.

Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery is proud to be located in Beachwood, OH.

Dr. Michelow has a strong commitment to this forward looking city and has been a long-time member of Beachwood’s Chamber of Commerce. Therefore our office was excited to mentor the Beachwood High School Senior’s marketing class in a unique project.

As a well-regarded cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgeon, Dr. Michelow has removed and reconstructed many skin cancers ranging from basal cell carcinoma to deadly melanomas. He is convinced that to ensure that you have healthy skin that will last a lifetime, skincare must begin early.

Teenagers must be made aware of the dangers of smoking, tanning booths and sunburn.

As a sponsor of Mrs. Jean’s Getz’s marketing class, Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery’s staff learned how teens think about their skin. The marketing class conducted focus groups with 55 teenagers ranging in age from 14 to 18 years old.

The findings:

Although teens hear the message that tanning can be dangerous to their skin, can lead to skin cancer and early aging later in life, they are not listening.

The majority of teens continued to visit tanning booths and to use sunscreen only on vacation.

In addition to conducting focus groups, the high schooler’s secondary research revealed that

Teens do what their friends do…

They offered an outstanding marketing campaign with a slogan – “Bold, Healthy Skin for Life.”

The class will be presenting their project to the Beachwood School Board, on April 11, 2011.

Breast Implants are in the News again - What is ALCL?

The FDA recently released a communication to health care providers and the public about a rare cancer of the immune system termed anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL).

Research indicates that women with breast prostheses may have a very small but increased risk of developing this disease in the scar capsule that develops arround the implant.

Is this common?
The number of cases is small (estimated at 60) compared to the total number of women with breast implants (5 to 10 million) world wide.

For women with implants:
The FDA recommends that women do not need to change their routine medical care.

Monitoring of the implants by a health care provider at regular intervals is recommended.

Among the confirmed cases of ALCL are patients with silicone as well as saline prostheses.

What to look for:
After the breasts have healed from the augmentation surgery, look for any changes in one or both breasts.
There may be new onset of pain, swelling, lumps or firm nodules that develop around the prostheses.

For Health Care Providers:
Because ALCL has generally only been identified in patients with late onset of symptoms such as pain, swelling (seroma) , lumps (capsular masses), the FDA does not recommend prophylactic breast implant removal in patients without symptoms or other abnormality.

What to test for when suspecting ALCL:
If the decision has been made to remove the prostheses then the following test are recommended by the FDA:

1. Fresh seroma fluid and representative portions of the capsule should be collected and sent for pathology tests to rule out ALCL.

2. Diagnostic evaluation should include:
a) Cytological evaluation of seroma fluid with Wright Giemsa stained smears and
b) Cell block immunohistochemistry testing for cluster of differentiation (CD) and
Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) markers.

3. All cases of ALCL should be reported to the FDA through MedWatch, the FDA’s Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program.

https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/medwatch/medwatch-online.htm
or at 1-800-332-1088.

Do I need to be concerned?
According to the National Cancer Institute, ALCL is rare (estimated 1 in 500,000 women per year in the U.S).
ALCL in the breast is even more rare; approximately 3 in 100 million women per year.

This article aims to provide some perspective and understanding about breast prostheses and ALCL.

The condition is rare, manifests with late onset seroma (inter alia), and is treated by removal of the entire capsule around the implant toghether with the implant (capsulectomy).

Regular visits for monitoring of the prosthese by a health care professional is recommended.

Breaking down the skin !

"Breaking Down the Skin" A Novel Approach to Treating Acne and Signs of Aging.

Gena O'Neill, Director of Aesthetic Skincare, is a medical licensed aesthetician with more than 14 years of experience in helping clients deal with the physical and emotional impact of acne and aging.

Committed to holistic practice, Gena's approach to skincare incorporates guidance on many levels. However, when it comes to acne and aging, Gena's gentle touch and tender care are rooted in an approach that often times means breaking down the skin and repairing it with product.

Acne and Aging, although positioned on two opposite sides of the spectrum, benefit from many similar techniques.

"Breaking down the skin" can refer to exfoliation with product, dermablading, peel or hydro-rejuvenation. These peel back years from the face and kill the spread of bacteria from acne.

After this completed, Gena will recommend a home care treatment plan to rebuild the skin using product.

This is what your colleagus have to say:

As a physician assistant student, having the opportunity to explore the field of plastic surgery during my clinical rotations has been a great experience.

The one-on-one exposure gained by working directly with a plastic surgeon has helped to improve my technical skills and also my diagnostic abilities. I have had the opportunity to see and and assist on a variety of both cosmetic and reconstructive procedures, and also observe and assist on in-office procedures.

Unlike many rotations, plastics allows for one-on-one time in the operating room with the surgeon, which means first assisting on a variety of cases. Improving my technical skills, such as suturing and skin grafting, with a surgeon's guidance is truly a unique experience. This valuable time with both the physician and the patients, in addition to a very friendly office staff, really made this rotation a truly positive learning environment.

I would encourage any physician assistant student looking for an exclusive clinical experience in which to improve their skills and also learn about an ever-advancing field to consider a plastic surgery rotation with Dr. Michelow and the office of Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery.
