Paying it forward by giving back

Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery partners with
Beachwood High School to educate
the future generation about
skincare and the dangers of sun damage.

Help us contribute to a highly worthwhile educational cause.

How fortunate can one be, having a Plastic Surgery practice in a city with an
outstanding school district such as Beachwood City Schools.

The Beachwood High Schools’ marketing program taught by Jean Getz is a fine example
of an educational experience that contributes to the district’s glowing reputation.

The popular marketing class draws high school students from Beachwood, Chagrin Falls
and West Geauga. Acting as both a marketing and an advertising agency, students are
able to obtain first hand, real-life experience by providing solutions to area
businesses. Students who show interest in marketing are selected to participate in the class. As
a team, they choose the company for which they would like to perform research and
develop a marketing plan.

I am honored to announce the class has chosen Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery and our
products for their current research and promotion develop program..
At an introductory meeting with the students last week, we proposed the following
challenges:
  1. How do we promote healthy skincare habits and the use of sunscreen to teens
    and young adults?
  2. How do we get the word out that melanoma is the second most common cancer
affecting teens? Protecting the skin with sunscreen is a simple and effective means
    of preventing Melanoma.
  3. Acne is a teens nemesis. How can a practitioner educate teens about the
management of a serious condition that may lead to scarring,
    disfigurement and personal embarrassment.

We are looking forward to the recommendations this bright group of teenagers will
provide. Their findings will be presented at a Deca (marketing) in Orlando, Florida.

In exchange for their hard work, Contemporary Cosmetic Surgery will make a
contribution to the program.

You too can be a part of this worthwhile educational cause.

Visit our office for any skincare, Botulinum toxin or dermal filler service and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to Beachwood High School.

This promotion will continue until the end of the semester when the Beachwood High School marketing program ends.

Call 216.595.6800 to join us in this exciting venture that will help young people
maintain the “health and beauty of their skin” for a lifetime.

2010 OVSPS Conference Success

June 30, 2010

On behalf of the conference committee of the Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgery (OVSPS), I would like to take this opportunity to express my special thanks to the society members who attended the May 2010 conference. A special thank you as well, to all the Exhibitors that supported this event.

The 2010 Conference of the OVSPS is now behind us. Feedback from the attendees has been uniformly positive. Many participants stated that the caliber of the meeting matched that of national and international conferences.

The theme of our conference was: "From laboratory research to clinical reality." This theme was well represented by the panel discussion regarding the form-stable cohesive silicone gel breast prosthesis by the Plastic Surgery researchers at Cleveland Clinic Foundation. The practical nature of the presentations and the vast experience of the presenters were well received. We acknowledge the commendable support provided by the Exhibitors for all their research contributions.

I am pleased to mention that there were a number of firsts this year. There were a record number of abstracts submitted for presentation by residents, fellows and medical students. Although this was the 53rd Annual Conference, posters were displayed for the first time. Judging of the posters was done during the evening cocktails on Friday and provided a relaxed yet entertaining education opportunity for all. The social events on Saturday evening included live jazz entertainment during a delicious dinner at the Lakefront Science Museum that was climaxed by the spectacular IMAX Hubble show.

I mention these facts, not to pat the Program Committee on the back nor to blow my own horn but rather to stress how the support (both professional and financial) of our members and the exhibitors ensured the success of our meeting.

The program committee did the research to set up the conference but it was contributions and support from the members and the Exhibitors that made it a reality. For this we thank you.

Yours sincerely,

Bryan J Michelow

Promoting Our Conference Theme

FROM LABORATORY RESEARCH TO CLINICAL REALITY

Biomedical research is a key force for change in the world today. This research has important economic and social implications that will affect our children, grandchildren and future generations.

In this regard, the Ohio Valley Society of Plastic Surgeons is privileged to draw its members from prominent academic institutions and private practices in Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, Western Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana.

There are few laboratories worldwide whose cutting edge research is as productive and influential as those within the institutions in these 5 states.

Our theme: From Laboratory Research to Clinical Reality was chosen to honor the contributions of the skilled Basic Science and Clinical Members of OVSPS and their affiliated institutions.

It is not surprising, therefore, that we have had a record number of abstracts submitted this year. With the superior quality of the abstracts and the limited number of presentations, we propose to highlight the scientific endeavors of some of our Residents and Fellows with the option to display their research as Posters.

Please join us for the 53rd Annual Meeting of the OVSPS and support the importance of the Laboratory Research, when applied to Clinical Reality, as the ideal source for best practice protocols.

We look forward to welcoming you to Cleveland soon.Yours sincerely,

Bryan

Peels, Microdermabrasion and Dermaplaning: Non invasive exfoliation

Techniques to combat the bad and ugly - and - make your skin feel good.

There are numerous non-invasive ways to exfoliate the skin ranging from a simple scrub at home to microdermabrasion an in-office procdure with no downtime. Dr. Michelow offers three techniques to slough off dead skin cells to promote collagen production, eliminate fine lines and wrinkles and addres acne. These techniques are microdermabrasion, peels and
dermaplaning.

While all three techniques offer glowing results, they address different skin conditions. Dr. Michelow's expert estheticians
will evaluate your skin and discuss your goals and then recommend techniques that will work best for you. While improvement in your skin's appearance may be immediate, you may acheive the most optimal results with a series of treatments and of course a proper skincare program at home.

Microdermabrasion: Dr. Michelow's estheticians offers crystal free mechanical microdermabrasion. A stainless diamond tipped steel wand is gently glides over your skin. Gentle suction draws up dead skin cells and polishes the skin. Our red light therapy included with treatment stimulates collagen production and is anti-bacterial to promote healing. There is no down time and no pain. Most clients experience a pleasant "tingle." This quick "lunchtime" procedure will leave your skin glowing. Service is finished with an application of sunscreen. There is little to any redness. There are many benefits to microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion can addresss stage one acne (black heads and comedones),
hyperpigmentation in clients of any color, signs of aging and photo damage and can treat minor and superficial scars.

Dermaplaning: May only be performed in a physicians office. A trained esthetician will slough off dead skin cells with a stainless razor tipped tool. It is appropriate for all patients beginning in the late 20s. Dermaplaning encourages the production of new cells, assists with the absoption of skincare products, removes minor wrinkles and improves skin texture.
It is effective with acne scaring. May be performed on clients of any skin of any color.

Mild Peels: Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs), such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels. These types of peels can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin for people who can't spare the time to recover from a phenol or TCA peel. AHA peels may be used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and
acne. Various concentrations of an AHA may be applied weekly or at longer intervals to obtain the best result. Your doctor will make this decision during your consultation and as the treatment proceeds. An alphahydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, can also be mixed with a facial wash or cream in lesser concentrations as part of a daily skin-care regimen to improve the
skin's texture.
